To School and Back

The first day of school has come and gone. It was definitely a new experience having my little sister there with me on campus, being by myself for a year. Somehow I just can't fathom why she finds the bus rides so enjoyable while I just stand there like "Yeah yeah yeah. I've done this too many times for it to be fun anymore". I guess it would have been a prudent idea to remind her to hold on when the bus started moving so she wouldn't fall into the dashingly cute college student behind her, but in hindsight I feel that he probably enjoyed the attention anyway. I know I enjoyed his. Anyway...

I have decided that college math might be redeemable after all, though I should probably wait until the final grades are in to make a decent judgment. They seem more like brainteasers than actual math problems, but I think for now they are doable. As for Literature, I must say I have never felt more challenged as a Christian than I have in this class. Here they list the Genesis Creation as one of the "creation myths" which I find to be an outright attack on my faith and on Truth. They also describe the "Christian Easter services and rituals" as just another run-of-the-mill cultural explanations of the changing seasons. What is wrong with these people? They actually implicate in the text that literature as written by man both in ancient and modern times is superior to religion, which they imply to be multi-faceted and naive. I believe I might just have to complain about this to the professor. What nerve they have, thinking they can brainwash students into believing such utter stupidity. No matter what the world says to try to diminish the faith, the truth will set us free in the end, and all will meet the Maker, whether they believe in Him or not.

Back-To-School Excitement and The "Ultimate Uniform"

Today is the last day of freedom. For on the dawn of the next week, school will start and all sweet summer goodness will have come to an end.  How one doth pine for the days of freedom and laziness!!

However, shopping for the new school year always raises my spirits. Who doesn't love creating new outfits and making new friends? This outfit is an easy go-to school special. I found the top last fall thrifting and just thought it would make the perfect back-to-school piece. Having graduated from a school that thrived on school uniforms, it's really fun to be able to create my own "school uniform" at the university.

In the excitement of things, I couldn't help putting together my dream of the ultimate uniform. I can't stop falling in love with the sweater in the middle. I think I would probably die if I saw that in a store.

A Sunday Afternoon Stroll

Did I mention I'm obsessed with polka dots? Just a little bit. There is nothing better than a good floppy hat, a breezy skirt, and a Sunday afternoon in Florida.  Except for finding a church that rivals the one back home in belief and in practice, which we were unfortunately unable to do. I searched all of the churches in the area and finally settled on one that I felt would be satisfactory enough for a Sunday service. When we got there, however, we found a church that was different from ours in several aspects, the drums, the NIV, and the wishy-washy preaching. However, during the service the pastor gave us a warm welcome, and afterwards members of the congregation flocked to us to offer their own personal welcomes and best wishes. It was one of the friendliest churches I have ever been to, but I couldn't wait to get back to my home church. You never realize how good something is until you are away from it for a little while.

From one lady to another, once you've found a good church, it's like coming home. It just feels right.

Sunny With A Slight Chance of Polka Dots

Feelin' sunny in Georgia! We stopped at a rest stop (for normal reasons) and decided to get a few pictures in. I love how you can turn a short ascot/scarf into a head wrap or reverse and pair it off. And of course, I couldn't resist those fab polka dots! They definitely made me feel 50s (and of course, Isis had to match ;) ).

I can't believe the school year is ready to start back up again. My younger sister will be joining me in college this year, and of course being the big sister/ experienced college student, I get to show her the ropes. And of course the guy on the tightrope that practices on the Main Quad. It's always funny to watch people try to walk it and end up falling off (it's only like 3 feet off the ground, so it's all good). Hopefully she won't want to try it too... after all, she has a history of breaking/ spraining body parts.

Unfortunately I have decided that I won't be studying art after all. As much as I love it and will be spending the rest of my life doing it, I feel like it is not the career choice for me, and instead am looking at Elementary education. I mean, when you spend as much time as I do playing "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" you kind of feel a calling for that exact line of work. Hopefully it will work out better than art did.

From one lady to another, it's probably in everyone's best interest not to try a tightrope unless you are A. a trained professional, or B. have a rubber mat below you. Those things just scream "Fall off me! Fall off me!".

From Forest to Phonebooth (in One Outfit)

 Love this shirt! Found it at a last-minute thrift run before our big trip to Florida and thought it would pair nicely with a breezy summer midi.

I couldn't resist stepping into this little phonebooth when we stopped at the Superman museum... I only regret that I didn't have a superhero costume hidden underneath my outfit. THAT would have been an epic experience!!  (I wonder where I can find a supergirl costume that covers a little more than just my rear...)

DIY Anchor Tote

 Make any sailor proud with a Do-It-Yourself Anchor Tote Bag. Whether you're getting your feet wet for the first time or are a seasoned DIY salt, this bag is a walk-on-the-beach to make!

 First I drew the anchor outline onto the bag with white fabric paint. Using a template probably would have been better, but I always feel like that's cheating on it. Crazy, right?

 Next, I filled in the anchor with both white and pink fabric paint, evenly striping the anchor.

 Using a blue permanent fabric marker, I drew on the rope, forming the end into a heart shape.

 I decided to add a personal touch, so I monogrammed it with an "S" stamp (although there is some controversy over whether or not it actually is an "S". But for all intents and purposes, I hereby declare it "S").

 I added dimension to the anchor by outlining in black some of the edges and angles.

 I also added dimension to the "S" with a pink fabric marker.

 At the last minute I thought I would tag it with one of my favorite stamps (which I got, along with the "S", at Michael's for $1.50 each).

 And voila! Not only was it a breeze to make, but it was also a boatload of fun!
