Be My Little Baby Bumblebee

       Be My Little Baby Bumblebee

Bonjour! It's been a whirlwind since Valentine's Day, but this week has been especially crazy. With a major assignment due every day and smaller assignments scattered throughout, it has been all I can do just to stay hygienically acceptable for public while making sure the work gets done.

One particular assignment I had to do was cultural research on my family genealogy. This turned out to be quite the event, involving a parent and grandparent and asking a lot of questions/ sorting through timelines. And what I found out was pretty interesting...

1. My family comes from a wide variety of European backgrounds, including England, Canada, and Ireland (as recently as the 1950s!) on one side and Germany, Switzerland, and Austria on the other (I am actually 4th generation German).
2. Many of my ancestors were teachers, preachers, farmers, or soldiers/captains. I must be following in the teacher trend, but none of the other occupations play out in direct or semi-direct relations.
3. My grandpa helped install the first ATMS in my hometown, and my great-grandma was a riveter (like Rosie the Riveter) during WWII.
4. We may have a Native American (Indian? Native North American?) line due to a possible marriage between a related Canadian trapper and a woman of a Canadian tribe.
5. One ancestor was the captain of a trading vessel who immigrated to Canada in the 1600s. A line would later immigrate from Canada to the U.S. in 1880.

Just having the confirmation that part of me was in Ireland (ok, a distant line of relatives, but still!) makes me want to break out the Celtic Thunder even more. And Irish Tenors. I've got a good excuse now, after all. :)

Isn't it fascinating how you can find out so much about the lives of people who are related to you, but who lived long ago in the past? What are your national roots?

New Year, New Hair

post signature Bonjour!

So I've been hiding a secret for a couple weeks.

Actually, it's only a secret if I have my hair up. Because on the first day of the new year, I decided it was time for a change (but not as big of a change as ended up occurring). What started out as an innocent idea to have a not-horribly-drastic new hairdo for 2015 quickly turned into a literal chop-fest, and by the time it was over approximately 6 inches of my naturally curly locks were laying in a sorry heap on the bathroom floor. The culprit? An amateur with scissors who has apparently never had my kind of experience cutting hair.

And so now I am walking around with (thanks to another sister) a clean, albeit short, haircut. At first I was really excited to have a new way to style my hair, but now it's at the point where I miss being able to toss it back in a decent ponytail. Also, I am not sure that it is even the right cut for my hair type, which leaves me scrambling to find styles that will suit it properly. All of this provides inspiration for my latest video, The 10 Stages of Getting a Haircut.

What was your worst haircut?

Hair-Raising Halloween

Bonjour!!!! Today I am coming to you from the wonderful world of fast-pace science and academic excellence! (How I wish I could say that on a regular basis...) I was able to come up with the idea AND the outfit for this costume in about 10 minutes with a little help from Google images and pieces I already had in my closet. I used a tweed suit jacket, a white blouse, a bow tie from an old costume, and a white-paper-cutout mustache. The final touch? Tousled hair. Very, very tousled hair. Because Einstein was a genius but apparently did not own a comb. The funniest part of my costume was the fact that I really did not have to do a whole lot to my hair to make it look like that-- it's naturally/automatically genius-styled. :/

Now, you may be wondering why I would allow my hair to behave like a Lady Gaga run-in with 90 mph winds (while wearing a white paper mustache, you will remember) to an institution of higher learning at which I am attempting to earn certification for a respectable career. Rest assured, dear bloggers, the only audience this costume had was a class of 5th-7th graders. And the principal. But who's counting? Suffice it to say, if you go out of your way to look like a crazy bird who may require a one-of-a-kind buckling jacket, kids will appreciate it. So if you are one of those people who live to see the strange looks and head-whips, by all means this is the costume for you!

What are you celebrating Halloween as?

Ruby Red Was Her Color

 Bonjour Lady Bloggers!

After a long battle with Political Science, I have finally won the grade I needed and just in the nick of time. You never question your high school diploma until you have been through the frying pan experience of that one class that you just cannot seem to get a good grade in, no matter how hard you study. But victory! I passed it and now I am just trying to put the whole experience out of my memory.

I am really hoping to share some DIYs in the future, as I have finally created a workable working area for myself after- what- five or so years of needing one but not making one? In high school I never studied in my room, so I guess my brain tricked me into thinking it wasn't necessary ever. Bad brain. It's funny how fast it changes track when it bumps its way over milestones at what seems like 80 miles an hour.

Looking forward to being more active in the Blogosphere!

My Favorite Things: June Edition

Bonjour! It's been a while... again... but summer school has me busier than I have ever been at the U during normal semesters. I am taking nutrition, political science, and (drumroll please)... Shakespeare! I have never read Romeo and Juliet, but I would die if I had more exposure to it than I have now. :)
Today I am sharing a few of my favorite things. They are the kind of things that make the difference between a good day and a bad day, and make life just a little bit more enjoyable in their special little ways.

 1. Easy-to-do hairstyles that are cute and simple.

2. Paris-themed duck tape. My life is complete.

3. Queen Anne's Lace

 4. Donutttttttttss (Don't look into their hypnotic eyes!)

5. Kitty Cuddles.

*Sigh*. I just want to look at that donut again.

What are some of your favorite things?

P.S. Sorry about the text-alignment issues. I can't seem to fix it for the life of me.

Scalloped Lace and Chocolate Stars

post signatureHappy Valentine's Day! I hope love is making its way to you in some form (chocolate is my preferred).

I saw this mug at Walmart and loved it. Guess what I ended up getting for Valentine's Day?

This is why you avoiding sitting in snow if at all possible ^

So today I had a bag of chocolates, and I decided to celebrate Valentine's Day by handing it out. The first victim-- I mean, person-- graciously accepted a couple pieces, and then more later when I wasn't looking. The second person I offered candy to was sitting in the seat in front of my sister and I on the bus. He first asked me if it was poison, then cautiously took a couple and even more cautiously ate them. Now I am wondering just how a tiny, innocent-looking person like me could be mistaken for an evil-poisoned-chocolate-hander-outer. As if that guy wasn't suspicous of me enough, the third person I offered it to just looked at me and said, "Sorry. Random stranger." Because my sister and I had been talking about why people wouldn't except chocolate from random people right beside him before I offered it. The last guy was very appreciative and said, "Thank you! I forgot it was Valentine's Day." I noticed that the guy before this guy quite quickly walked away from my sister and I during this. But hey, I got three out of four people to take chocolate from me. Suspicious little me or not, chocolate is anyone's friend. :)

Beginning next week, I will be doing Fashion Fridays, which will highlight a fashion tip worthy of sharing that comes from a fascinating book I found at the I.D.E.A. Store. Because we all have days where we wish we had a personal fashion advisor in our closet. Or at least I do. :)

And why yes, yes I did crochet those hearts. Unfortunately, I am an amateur crochet-er and don't have the skills to share a pattern of it. However, if you are interested in making these you can most likely find a pattern online somewhere. :)

May the chocolate be ever in your favor.
